Safety Engineer - Under the supervision of a Team Leader, the incumbent provides hands on, in the field, technical and administrative safety support to all levels of management at the Stonewall site (Manufacturing and Support Services Operations). Reviews operations, facilities equipment and procedures to assure conformance to recognized internal and external safety regulations, standards, policies, procedures and guidelines. Participates in identification of hazards through inspections, audits, and hazard analyses. Incumbent will provide support and/or guidance to Elkton site customers in other technical elements of Process Safety Management, high risk work activities, industrial hygiene, and safety documentation. Additionally the incumbent may have involvement in project safety checklist reviews and pre-startup safety reviews/walk-through. accident/incident investigations, and perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required. Concentrations in occupational safety and health highly preferred. Ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of hands on, in the field safety experience. Having or working towards CSP certification is desirable, as well as general awareness of environmental issues. Must be a self starter with good inter-personal skills. Must be able to demonstrate flexibility and ability to work in a customer service focused, cross-functional team environment. Good written and verbal communication skills and good analytical abilities and computer skills are essential. Leadership competencies are also essential e.g. collaboration and ability to work in teams, communicating powerfully and prolifically, motivating others, demonstrating ownership, accountability and innovation.

North Carolina State University is currently seeking a qualified Occupational Health Manager to work in the Environmental Health and Safety Department on our campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Minimum Requirements: Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must also have working knowledge of regulatory requirements, including knowledge and experience with OSHA regulations. Applicants should have excellent oral and written communication skills and computer capabilities.
Preferred Experience: Masters degree in biological sciences, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related applied science required, plus 5 years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene or biological safety. Professional certification ( Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Biological Safety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional) desirable; experience in research environments and with animal research is preferred . Familiarization with CDC and NIH guidelines is a plus. About the Position: Consistent with the goals and objectives of the Environmental Health & Safety Department, the Occupational Health Manager manages a comprehensive occupational health program to provide occupational health and regulatory compliance services in support of research and maintenance and animal care activities. Responsibilities include development and administration of programs and procedures for a comprehensive occupational health program; Working under the direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Occupational Health Manager administers, critiques and recommends for improvement, and modifies as necessary, the following programs and duties:
- Ensures program compliance with regulatory laws and best practices related to occupational health.
- Assesses risks pertaining to the use of chemicals or physical agents that may cause adverse health effects. Makes recommendations to control these risks. Advises faculty and staff regarding occupational health issues.
- Reviews research protocols, providing recommendations on risk control techniques such as engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recommended operating procedures.
- Co-administers the university hearing conservation program with Student Health Services.
- Co-administers the university medical surveillance program with Student Health Services.
- Administers the university respiratory protection program.
- Conducts audits/inspections of university laboratories and other workspaces. Documents findings, prepares reports and communicates findings to responsible management.
- Develop and present occupational health safety training as well as assist with other EH&S training efforts.
- Participates in review of animal experimentation protocols to identify occupational health concerns and provide appropriate recommendations.
- Reviews plans for new laboratory building construction and renovations of existing facilities as needed.
- Develops emergency response protocols with campus and outside groups and responds to hazardous materials incidents and emergencies as needed to support the EHS emergency response team during and after-hours.

Loss Control Specialist (6/3/10)
Provides risk management consultation services to a portfolio of large and/or complex accounts within a given territory or operational unit. Responsible for developing or enhancing loss control policies, practices and new products for Commercial and Personal Lines. Serves as a consultant to loss control and home care associates and outside clients/vendors.
Job Responsibilities:
- Meets with client's safety, risk management, and/or insurance representatives to review loss analysis and loss control evaluations. Develops a Service Plan to address hazards and exposures. Provide consultation on loss mitigation issues for both Personal Lines and Commercial.
- Coordinates service plan requirements for multi-location accounts with the appropriate loss control personnel. Determines skills needed to effectively service (branch) regional operations and conduct onsite training programs as agreed on is Service Plan.
- Conduct prospect surveys for large or unique exposures. Coordinates prospect survey activity for multi-location accounts. Determines appropriate service provider.
- Provides comprehensive corporate level survey reports to underwriting for large or unique exposure.
- Identifies hazards, exposures and potential loss causing activities or operations. Evaluates client's safety related programs. Assesses effectiveness of programs.
- Conducts loss analysis to identify root, not basic cause of losses. Researches loss frequency and severity trends associated with client’s industry.
- Provides client examples of effective safety programs, employee training programs, and engineering controls that address risks associated with client's operations.
- Maintains ongoing communications with the appropriate claims and underwriting personnel regarding services and issues associated with client.
- Assists clients in developing specialized educational programs, training materials, or engineering control methods to improve risk management and safety programs.
- Recommends total loss control techniques through study and research of actual and potential accident-loss producing conditions. Develops technical data through instrumentation measurements for special loss control suggestions.
Job Requirements:
- Education: Undergraduate studies in occupational/industrial safety, agricultural sciences, engineering, or insurance related curriculums preferred. Attainment of Certified Safety Professional, Associate of Loss Control Management, Associate Safety Professional or Associate in Risk Management desired.
- Licenses: Associates must obtain the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit, the associate will be ineligible to continue in the position.
- Experience: Five years loss control experience in the insurance industry, government or other business institutions.
- Knowledge: Loss control policies, practices and procedures. Exposure, safety, environment and construction concepts and principles. Sales concepts for prospecting and retaining business.
- Skills/Competencies: Communicate effectively with policyholder, field sales and office personnel, both orally and in written form. Ability to provide consultation and training to internal/external clients. Analyze causes and trends of loss data experience and recommend solutions. Make decisions regarding day-to-day operations involving risk evaluation and determining services that will help reduce/eliminate unsafe conditions/unsafe acts/inadequate management controls. Ability to motivate people to affect change. Must be able to use PC and applicable software. Regularly and consistently demonstrates the Nationwide Values and Guiding Behaviors.
- Working Conditions: May require frequent and overnight travel. Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record. Must be able to make physical inspections. Must be able to climb, stoop, bend, balance on various heights, crawl and lift up to 50 lbs.
